The Hyena is a system administration tool that facilitates managing large Windows 200x network, Active Directory irrespective of its size. Whether it is a miniscule number of systems or a vast network, Hyena can gracefully help you to keep a watch on the various processes, states of the systems. It also supports various different types of networks, hundreds or thousands of domains and servers and still not worry about things getting out of hand. Hyena is centralized in the sense that despite the sheer volume of data, everything is organized and presented in an easy way.
Their latest release is version 11.5 and it has many added advantages compared to all basic set of fields that it monitors. They have added more functionality and support for Active Directory including Active Editor and Active Tasks to simplify management issues.
- There were issues in accessing Distinguishing Name Attributes that have been covered in this release. Additions like copy-to-clipboard support, managing various directory attributes like multi-valued integers have been introduced.
- They have improved the Object Manager and Query Setup. Object Manager is still accessible the same way as before, but additionally supports resizing as well. There are changes to Active Directory Queries including a direct button in the toolbar.
The key feature of version 11.7 is the inclusion of Active Task, which supports massive and simultaneous import and modification of Active Directory attributes from just a single delimited text file carrying the changes.
- Furthermore, all the recently executed tasks are saved in a "text file" which acts as the template for executing the commands again and again if needed without having to rewrite them from scratch. This is especially useful for long queries.
- Hyena also provides automation of various tasks that are needed frequently like creation of home directories from previously created templates.
All the various functionalities including those like exporting capabilities to Microsoft Access and Excel are part of both the editions of Hyena. It is currently available in two separate options, that is, Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition. Its licensing policy actually depends upon the number of administrators using it. This helps its cost efficiency and keeps is low compared to other similar solutions in the market. It's 30 day trial version is fully featured and functional and free support is available during this and even after this evaluation period.
Hyena is one such tool that system administrators cannot do without.
Changes on the new version:
Modified Layout - The new layout makes better use of screen space and allows resizing for viewing more information.
Sub-Menu Support - Up to three (3) levels of sub-menus can now be created, allows for better management of large query sets.
Menu Level Options - Queries can now be placed directly on the main context menu for easier and faster access to the most common queries you select.
Import and Export - Easily export queries to your co-workers and import queries created by others.
Query Library - A new library of dozens of directory queries can now be accessed and used as templates and examples. See below for more information.
